Using Your
Debit MasterCard

Questions and Answers

  Q. How do I use it?
  A. Follow these easy steps.

Point of Sale Machine Diagram

  1. Make sure you have sufficient funds in your account to cover the amount of the purchase (just like when writing a check).
  2. Swipe the card through the card reader.
  3. Press the "credit" button, then sign the receipt. At a gas pump, you do not need to sign the receipt (just like with a credit card). There is no fee for using the card when you press the "credit " button.Be sure to record the amount of your purchase in your check register and subtract it from your account balance, since this amount is being electronically deducted from your checking account.

  Q. Is there a fee for making purchases?
  A. No, unlike other financial institutions, but we ask you  to press the
"credit " key and not the "debit" key when using your debit card. It saves our credit union money if you press the "credit " key  because of the way the transaction is processed. Goldmark has decided not to charge a fee of 25 cents that other institutions impose to encourage you to press "credit" instead of "debit". We do however encourage you to use the "credit" as much as possible and help save us all some money.

  Q. Is there any reason I would ever want to press "debit"?
  A. Yes. If you want to get cash back over the amount of the purchase, you would have to press "debit" or "ATM" and then enter your secret PIN (personal identification number). This will incur no fee. This is a lot cheaper than having fees charged if you get the cash from a non-Goldmark ATM machine, or a non-SUM Network machine.

  Q. If I press "credit " does it incur debt?
  A. No. The card works the same way for purchases, no matter whether you push "credit " or "debit." You still have to subtract the amount of the purchase from your check register. Purchases will be automatically deducted from your checking account, similar to what happens when a check clears or when you withdraw cash from an ATM.

  Q. What if my card is stolen out of the mail? Can the thief activate it?
  A. No. The only way your card can be initially activated is by using your secret PIN (personal identification number), which you can do at an ATM. Since nobody else knows your secret PIN (the same one as on your current ATM card), nobody else can activate it.

  Q. Can my card be used without my signature, or without a PIN?
  A. Only at gas pumps, which is exactly the same as with a credit card.

  Q. What if a thief uses my debit card?
  A. You have no more liability for a lost or stolen debit card than you would for a credit card! If a thief withdrew funds from your account and caused checks to bounce, Goldmark would even cover your NSF fees, as long as you let us know the card is missing. If your card is lost or stolen, let us know immediately and we will disable the card. For more information about debit card liability, please see the  Electronic Fund Transfers Disclosure or call a Member Service Representative at 508-222-3009. Thanks for your assistance.
